Other Medical Uses
Hyperforin, the main active compound in St. John's Wort, has been studied beyond depression. Most of these findings are preclinical — promising in the lab or in animals, but still awaiting solid human trials.
Addiction and dependency
By influencing dopamine and serotonin pathways involved in reward, hyperforin has shown potential in animal studies to reduce alcohol-seeking behavior and nicotine dependence. This work is preclinical; there are no standardized doses or protocols, and any use should be part of an evidence-based plan guided by a professional.
Anti-inflammatory properties
Applied topically, St. John's Wort may help calm inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and may ease some nerve and muscle pain. Laboratory work has also noted antibacterial activity relevant to burn care. These effects should complement, not replace, conventional treatment.
ADHD and OCD
For ADHD, the interest centers on hyperforin's effect on dopamine (important for attention and impulse control), with serotonin as a secondary factor — so far based mainly on animal models. For OCD, researchers have hypothesized roles in serotonin regulation and glutamate-receptor modulation, but human trial evidence is lacking. It is not a replacement for professional treatment.
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
There is growing interest in using St. John's Wort to ease PMS symptoms such as mood swings, irritability and fatigue, on the theory that it acts somewhat like a prescription antidepressant. Responses vary and more trials are needed, so medical supervision is advised.
Safety note
Across all of these uses, clinical trials remain the deciding factor, and consulting a provider is paramount. St. John's Wort is not right for everyone.
