Hyperforin vs. Hypericin: What's the Difference?

St. John's Wort contains two compounds people often confuse. For decades hypericin was assumed to be the key ingredient; research has since shifted the spotlight to hyperforin.

Hypericin: a vibrant pigment

Hypericin is the fluorescent red pigment in the plant — a complex aromatic molecule. It can cross the blood-brain barrier and may influence dopamine and related chemicals, but it has only a limited effect on serotonin reuptake and, on its own, a modest impact on mood.

Hyperforin: the potent reuptake inhibitor

Hyperforin is now considered the main driver of St. John's Wort's effects on anxiety and depression. It can simultaneously slow the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and GABA, acting on several neurotransmitter systems at once.

Why hyperforin gets the credit

Lab studies, animal studies and clinical trials together point to hyperforin as the constituent most responsible for benefits in mild-to-moderate depression. That is why standardizing a supplement to its hyperforin content (rather than hypericin) matters so much.

Watch for drug interactions

Hyperforin activates the P450 family of liver enzymes, which is why St. John's Wort can change how other drugs are processed. Responses differ from person to person, so personalized advice and monitoring are wise.
