How Does St. John's Wort Affect Mood?
St. John's Wort is widely used to lift low mood. In Germany it has long been a mainstream treatment — at one point prescribed several times more often than Prozac — and it is generally seen as gentler than prescription antidepressants.
It is considered effective for mild-to-moderate depression, although the exact mechanisms are still not fully understood. What follows is the current best picture of how it nudges brain chemistry.
A natural reuptake inhibitor
Much like SSRIs, St. John's Wort appears to raise the levels of several mood-related chemical messengers. Alongside slowing their reuptake, it is thought to inhibit enzymes — monoamine oxidase (MAO) and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) — that would otherwise break those messengers down.
1. Serotonin
Serotonin is closely tied to mood, well-being and a sense of contentment. Stress and depression can disrupt the serotonin system. Some formulations add 5-HTP to support serotonin levels. Higher serotonin also supports melatonin production, which can help with the sleep problems that often accompany depression.
2. Norepinephrine
Norepinephrine affects concentration, attention, memory, alertness and sleep, and plays a role in the body's stress response. It is not the single cause of depression, but imbalances contribute to symptoms. Supporting healthy levels can improve mood and sleep.
3. Dopamine
Dopamine is involved in motivation, reward, pleasure, movement and the sleep-wake cycle. Its activity is partly regulated by serotonin and can be boosted by light-to-moderate exercise (the familiar "runner's high"). Research increasingly points to dopamine as an important player in treating depression.
Interactions to be aware of
Because it changes neurotransmitter levels, St. John's Wort can interact with prescription antidepressants, birth-control pills and some over-the-counter drugs. Combined with certain substances it can contribute to serotonin syndrome, a potentially serious reaction. Always check with a provider first.
Treating depression naturally
For mild-to-moderate depression, St. John's Wort offers a plant-based way to support serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. It is classified as a dietary supplement — for major or severe depression, professional help is essential.
